Ombudsman Participates in the Commemoration of the 57th Anniversary of ASEAN

On August 8, 2024, the Chief of the Ombudsman for Human Rights and Justice, Virgรญlio da Silva Guterres Lamukan, participated in the commemoration of the 57th anniversary of the founding of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The event, hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Timor-Leste, took place in Dili.
The ceremony was attended by notable figures including President Josรฉ Ramos-Horta, President of Parliament Fernanda Lay, Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmรฃo, President of the Court of Appeals Doelindo dos Santos, and Indonesian Ambassador Octo Dorinos Manik, who also serves as the ASEAN Head of Mission in Dili. Ambassadors, diplomats, and other dignitaries were also present.
Founded on August 8, 1967, ASEAN was established to promote regional stability, economic growth, and cultural exchange among its member states. The organization has played a significant role in fostering cooperation and dialogue within Southeast Asia. As Timor-Leste’s engagement with ASEAN grows, the commemoration highlighted the importance of these regional partnerships in advancing human rights and justice.
The Ombudsman for Human Rights and Justice’s participation underscores a commitment to regional cooperation and the shared goals of ASEAN in promoting human rights and democratic values.
