PDHJ Recognized for Commitment to Human Rights with “A” Status Recommendation by GANHRI’s Sub-Committee on Accreditation (SCA)

The Provedoria dos Direitos Humanos e Justiça (PDHJ) is celebrating a significant milestone with the recommendation from the Sub-Committee on Accreditation (SCA) of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) to re-accredit it with “A” status. This commendation reflects the PDHJ’s unwavering commitment to promoting and protecting human rights in Timor-Leste.

The SCA’s recommendation was made during its sessions held from October 1 to 3 and October 14 to 18, 2024. In a letter on behalf of the GANHRI Secretariat, the SCA outlined the accreditation status recommendation and provided a report detailing its findings.

The SCA praised the PDHJ for its proactive efforts, particularly in strengthening responses to gender-based violence (GBV), fostering robust partnerships with civil society organizations (CSOs), and enhancing accountability within the military and police. This recommendation not only affirms the PDHJ’s impact but also highlights its dedication to aligning with international human rights standards.

Key areas of recognition include:

  1. Commitment to Inclusive Leadership: The SCA noted the importance of transparency in the selection of the Provedor and encouraged the PDHJ to advocate for a more inclusive process involving civil society, reflecting a strong commitment to democratic principles.
  2. Progress in Gender Representation: With female representation in managerial roles increasing to 59%, the PDHJ is making strides toward gender parity, setting a commendable example for other institutions.
  3. Effective Implementation of Recommendations: The PDHJ has successfully implemented numerous recommendations from 2018 to 2022, demonstrating its effectiveness in advocating for human rights and ensuring accountability.
  4. Advocacy for Financial Autonomy: The SCA’s recognition of the need for financial independence reinforces the PDHJ’s ongoing advocacy for adequate funding, allowing it to continue its vital work without external constraints.

The PDHJ is proud of this achievement and views the SCA’s recommendation as a validation of its hard work and dedication to human rights. The institution remains committed to addressing the areas highlighted by the SCA and looks forward to further strengthening its role as a champion for human rights in Timor-Leste.
