Deputy Ombudsman Encourages Community Leaders in Baguia to Prioritize Human Rights and Good Governance

Baguia, 22 October 2024 – Deputy Ombudsman for Human Rights, Maria Marilia da Costa, called on community leaders in the Baguia Administrative Post of Baucau Municipality to prioritize the protection of human rights. She highlighted the importance of respecting individual rights and providing services that promote good governance.

“The message of protecting human rights is crucial for everyone. It is essential to respect the rights of all individuals and support efforts to implement good governance within our villages and communities,” stated Deputy Ombudsman Marilia during a training session for community leaders in Baguia on Tuesday (10/22/2024).

She emphasized that community leaders play a vital role in addressing grassroots concerns and challenges, particularly in assisting residents with processing documents at the village headquarters. “Their involvement in this training is key to enhancing their knowledge and capacity to promote and protect human rights, as well as to foster good governance in public services at the village level,” she added.

At the same event, Baguia Post Administrator Mário Xavier da Silva expressed gratitude on behalf of the participants to the PDHJ for its initiative in sharing valuable knowledge with community leaders. “I am thankful to the PDHJ for coming to the Baguia Administrative Post to provide training on promoting and protecting human rights and enhancing good governance in public services at the village level,” he said.

He encouraged participants to actively engage in the training to better serve their communities.

The training was inaugurated by a representative of the President of the Baucau Municipal Authority, Cesaltina Maria de Jesus, and conducted by the Ombudsman for Human Rights and Justice (PDHJ). The training featured trainers from the PDHJ Baucau Territorial Delegation, led by Joanita Silvira da Costa and her team. It will take place over three days, from October 22 to 24, 2024, at the Baguia Administrative Post Hall, with participation from 46 community leaders and administration officials.
