Provedor Urges Government to Invest in Key Sectors on International Children’s Day

Suai, 1 June 2024 – Virgilio da Silva Guterres ‘Lamukan’, the Human Rights and Justice Provedor, together with key partners, celebrated International Children’s Day in Suai, Covalima.

During his brief address, the Provedor emphasized the need for the government to make substantial investments in securing the future of children. “While we allocate funds for the elderly and veterans, we neglect to provide special funding for our children,” remarked the Provedor. He advocated for the prioritization of state budget allocation in critical sectors such as education, health, and agriculture to safeguard children’s well-being.

Lamukan highlighted the direct impact that investment in these sectors would have on children’s development. “Investing in agriculture ensures adequate nutrition, which is vital for children’s physical growth, while education fosters intellectual development, and healthcare ensures their overall well-being,” he explained. Expressing concern over Timor-Leste’s high rate of stunting cases, Lamukan urged the government to address this issue urgently. “With a stunting rate of 47%, Timor-Leste faces a grave threat to its future. Immediate action is imperative,” warned the Provedor, stating that PDHJ would advocate for the inclusion of measures to combat stunting in the general state budget allocation.

Regarding violence against children, Provedor Lamukan called for an end to all forms of violence, including within schools. He urged families, the state, and the community to fulfill their duty to protect children, as outlined in Article 18 of the Constitution.

Warm wishes to children across Timor-Leste and around the globe on this special day.
