Training Session for New School Inspectors on Human Rights and Good Governance

Díli, 24 July 2024– Virgílio da Silva Guterres ‘Lamukan,’ the Ombudsman for Human Rights and Justice, recently contributed to a comprehensive training session for new school inspectors by providing valuable insights on human rights and good governance. This session, which is part of a broader curriculum, aims to enhance the inspectors’ skills across various subjects.

In his address, Guterres emphasized the critical importance of human rights and good governance, offering guidance on integrating these principles into educational settings. He expressed hope that his contribution would significantly enhance the inspectors’ ability to advocate for and protect human rights within schools.

Guterres highlighted the importance of adhering to international human rights treaties ratified by Timor-Leste, which are crucial for safeguarding human rights and preventing violence against children. He encouraged inspectors to actively monitor and address any forms of violence in schools and stressed the significance of effective communication between teachers and students.

Additionally, the Ombudsman underscored students’ rights to quality education and the provision of necessary educational materials by teachers. He reminded attendees that teachers must maintain consistent class attendance to ensure that students’ right to education is upheld.

The training took place at the INFORDEPE Hall in Balide, Dili, and was attended by school inspectors from 13 municipalities, with a total of 86 new inspectors participating in this important session.
